Information and Instructions - READ PRIOR TO COMPLETING APPLICATION

  1. DO NOT submit this online admission application if you:
    1. Previously attended SSU as a freshman or transfer student 
                      or
    2. Are applying to the Graduate School            
  2. Read the instructions provided below and complete the application in its entirety. Do not leave any blank items in order to expedite the processing of your application.   
  3. Print out the confirmation page and keep a copy for your records. Do not send to our office as we will receive your information electronically. Paper submitted copies of electronic applications will not be processed.
  4. Keep a copy of your submitted documents for your own personal use. All documents submitted to the Office of Admissions become and remain the property of Savannah State University and will not be returned to the applicant, duplicated, or transferred to another institution.

Freshmen Applicant Requirements

       
  • SAT (Minimum score 480 Evidence-Based Reading Section and 440 Math Section)
  • ACT (Minimum score 17 English or Reading, 17 math, and 17 composite)
  • 3.0 GPA (Test Optional)
  • Freshman index of 1940
  • 17 Required High School Curriculum (RHSC) units (4 English courses; 4 math courses; 4 sciences; 3 social sciences; 2 years of the same foreign language) 

Please note:

Transcripts: Please request your counselor or principal to electronically send an official transcript of all high school work to the Office of Admissions. This should be done before the completion of your senior year in high school. Upon graduation, your counselor will need to electronically submit your final high school transcript with the official date of graduation and also with high school graduation test scores (if graduating from a Georgia high school). If you participated in Dual Enrollment, request your college transcript from the institutions' Registrar's Office in order to receive credit.   

    ACT/SAT exam: If you have not previously taken the College Board exam, we highly recommend and encourage you to take the SAT Reasoning Test (SAT) or the American College Test (ACT) on the next scheduled date. Be sure to request that a copy of your scores be sent electronically to Savannah State University and remember to register for the test well in advance of the testing date to avoid late registration fees and college admission deadline dates.

Faxes: When faxing documents to the Office of Admissions please print your full name, date of birth, student ID and enrollment term at the top of each page.

Transfer Applicant Requirements

  • 30 semester hours (or 45 quarter hours) earned at a regionally accredited college (with a grade point average of 2.0 or higher)
  • If less than 30 semester hours earned, the applicant must meet freshman applicant requirements as stated above

Transient Applicant Requirements

  • Must submit a letter of approval/authorization from the dean or registrar of your "home" institution to enroll in specific courses at Savannah State University
  • Must be in good academic standing at "home" institution

Postbaccalaureate or Special Admit Applicant Requirements

  • Must have completed a bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited college or university
  • Must submit official academic transcripts from all other colleges attended

Dual Enrollment Admission Requirements

  • SAT combined Total Score of 1050 or higher; including at least a 480 Evidence-Based Reading Section and a 440 Math Section
  • ACT Composite score of 20; including at least a 17 English and 17 Math
  • Next-Gen ACCUPLACER score of 237 Reading, 258 Math and 4 Writeplacer
  • Cumulative GPA of at least a 3.0

International Student Requirements

  • Must meet appropriate freshman or transfer admission requirements
  • Applicants from non-native English-speaking countries must submit TOEFL scores
  • Proof of financial support will be required before and I-20 is issued
  • All foreign transcripts must be evaluated by a professional evaluation service, such as World Education Services or Joseph Silny and Associates prior to submission to the Office of Admissions

Verification of Lawful Presence

In accordance with Board of Regents Policy 4.3.4, all applicants who are accepted for admission or readmission to Savannah State University and who seek to be classified as in-state for tuition purposes, will be required to provide validation of residency and lawful presence in both the State of Georgia and the United States. Acceptance to Savannah State University may be delayed until lawful presence is verified.

The U.S. Department of Education will automatically validate the lawful presence of any student who completes a FAFSA application; therefore, if you are applying for financial aid it will not be necessary for Savannah State University to perform additional verification of your residency status. Otherwise, you will be required to submit one of the following documents to the Office of Admissions:

  • Certified U.S. Birth Certificate (no photocopies)
  • Consular Report of Birth Abroad (FS-240)
  • Current U.S. Passport
  • GA Driver's License (issued after 1/1/2008)
  • GA ID Card (issued after 1/1/2008)
  • U.S. Certificate of Birth Abroad issue by Dept. of State (DS-1350)
  • U.S. Certificate of Citizenship (USCIS form N-560 or N-561)
  • U.S. Certificate of Naturalization (USCIS form N-550 or N-570)

General Deadlines

Applications and all required supporting credentials must be received by the Office of Admissions prior to the deadline date:

  • Fall semester - May 31 (Priority)
  • Spring semester - November 15
  • Summer semester - May 1


Application Disclaimer

  • Complete all applicable items and sign the application agreement statement. Incomplete applications will delay processing, financial aid funding, and effect on-campus housing availability upon acceptance.
  • Official transcripts must be sent directly to Savannah State University from ALL institutions attended.
  • Failure to declare attendance at another institution will result in denial of credit for such work or immediate dismissal.
